Political Vibration

There is always difference of opinion. Consciousness requires boundary; an other must be established in order for there to be a conscious self. An “I” (Ich) requires a dance with a “Thou” (Du). Reality is the dynamic balance that results from the interplay of opposites.

But balance can be achieved with different dynamics.. A child’s see-saw has a balance – but with big amplitude waves – whereas as we stand we unconsciously make fine adjustments to stay upright.

And of course, opposites are related to each other. They are in a sense part of the same thing; coins with two sides.  Mrs Thatcher was a consequence of Arthur Scarghill – in a way a part of the same system. Donald Trump’s appeal and Daish are parts of systems reacting to each other. Brexit and Boris Johnson is a response to Euro-fanaticism and Jean-Claude Juncker.

Why are the swings in politics so severe now? Is it simply that we have had decades of stability in the west and that we’re due for challenges? Is it the pressure of global population growth? Is it the split between those who have and the rest of humanity?

Whatever, it is the duty of civilised peoples to work to temper the big swings, to be considerate in our language and to see the point of view of the other.

Otherwise, we’ll all fall off the global see-saw together.

Hoi Poloi

Let us fight for the idea of Europe. Let it though be a Europe as a democracy.

The current path is toward a politicracy – rule by and in the interests of the chattering and political elite. What we need, and will happen peacefully or violently – is to get back to rule by hoi poloi.. An Old concept that we seem to be forgetting. Invented in Greece not Brussels. Democracy.

Odd isn’t it that Britain is reviled by the continental political classes as being “uneuropean” . Yet we are the peoples who actually obey the club rules, we are the biggest per capita net contributor 11.3 BIllion euros in 2013 and rising.. And we fought for European freedoms last century.

Britons won’t stand for ever for this nonsense. But. It’s the cosy smoke filled room decision making that must be swept away. Not the concept of cooperation and peaceful non nationalistic communion. Europe as a USA style federal democracy.. not oh NOT rule by Brussels fat cat insiders …

If Europe is not reformed so that the people are re-empowered then I’m rather afraid we’ll have to go through the nasty taste of nationalism again with all of its attendant division and ultimately of violence.

So, let us fight for the ideal of a democratic Europe.

Social movements – sorting the sheep from the goats

It occurs to me that there is a key way in which social, political and religious movements can be separated. Sheep from goats, as it were. It is this – is there a monologue or a conversation? It’s the difference between being preached at or engaged. Whether or ordinary, personal and humble views matter. Put another way – is the first contact – on the one hand inspiration and question – or rather dictation and dogma?

I have some particular views on which are which. They’re mine. If I shared them – it would be dogma. What do you think?

Scotland is an idea…

… a dream and a gift. Outgoing, passionate, vibrant, edgy, generous, educated, intellectual, yeasty.

What loss to the world if this were once again to be bound to the rock of jingoism and re-contained in the economics of a small land, with a declining and ageing population on the rainy margins of Europe.
