We think therefore we are

Thinking is plural. It involves subject (thinker) and object (idea). Reality is in the relationship between; it is not concrete or material. “I think, therefore I am” is incomplete. Better would be – I think ABOUT, therefore there is existence.
This isn’t my insight, but variously Einstein’s (relativity), Bion’s (the mind as apparatus to think pre-existing ideas), Whitehead’s (Process and Reality) and Buber’s (Ich Ind Du). If there is a “singularity”, then it is outside the space-time in which we swim and spawn. As we Christians express it – God is “the Word, existing beyond time”. Others say the same thing in different ways (Nirvana ).

What we experience is dis-integration. Alone we are: alone. Point-less. Together and between us lies the truth. Indeed materiality is chimera: we reflect each other, flowers of the same plant. Reality is in the honouring of the God in You, in I-Thou rather than I-It.

“World is crazier and more of it than we think,

Incorrigibly plural. I peel and portion

A tangerine and spit the pips and feel

The drunkenness of things being various.”

  1. We think BECAUSE we are.
No, “It” is not outside, our space time is “it”.
If our lives have a purpose, then surely it is to think.
We exist to think. Actions are experiments that result from thought.
Thought is not directly a creator. I cannot think of a dragon in front of me and it appear, but I can think of an object and manufacture it.
Thought is an influencer. Directly at a distance and indirectly through physical action.
Maybe thought is a creator in that it creates connections that bend the warp and weft upon which we navigate. (still convinced that is why we met)
Once a thought has been thought, does it make it easier to be thought again by someone else? As has been shown in experimental chemistry and physics.
What if all the thoughts throughout our lives are the processing that results in the flash across a synapse in the brain of God. Our lives result in a 0 or a 1 in a digital process.
If that were the case then perhaps those of us with no children are delivering the final 0 or 1 in the running of a programme, whilst those with children are still mid process. The programme being run passed on genetically.

Please stop making me think G. It hurts.

  2. I haven’t read the Golden Braid, but it looks very interesting. You will find the blog waitbutwhy.com very very interesting. The guy that writes it writes infrequently, but very long well thought through and researched posts. He has been off on one about Elon Musk for a while and has just published his 4th and final post on the guy. They make a great read. Some of his past posts are really amazing, particularly on AI – scary reading at times:-0 Well worth a dig through the history.

  3. It would be great to meet soon. I would really like that. Unfortunately/fortunately I am mostly working from home at the moment so not likely to cross paths. It would need special effort at some time to get together, and pinning you down is very tricky…..
